What is happening when selecting “auto” for “Set Protocol For Canonical URLs” ? I’ve left it on auto, just to discover that one of my sites used http for the canonical link, where I expected https.

I also don’t see a use case where you’d select http for a https site.

Hi,

I no longer see the option in the General Settings to set the Protocol for Canonical URLs, has that been removed?  I have a site with https and http indexing issues and I want to try to use the canonical urls on the https site to point to the http version.  Is that possible and the best method for directing google in indexing the http version over the https or would you recommend using 301 redirects from https to http instead?

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Michael,

Thank you for your response.  Apparently one of my programmers turned on the SSL option somewhere which caused some pages to be https and then google started indexing certain pages as https.  I am not a programmer, but what my project manager is telling me is that it would take some time to switch things over on the site to https and setting up the API data connections that are being pulled into the site, time that we are not willing to put in on certain sites, especially ones that are currently not a priority for us to have an ssl.  So we obviously would like for those sites to be correct and uniform in indexing and in google’s eyes.

I have never seen anywhere in Search Console where you can choose https vs http.  I know they have the option to choose to show www. or non-www. It would make sense in my opinion for them to do the same for that.
