For our needs, having a dynamically created sitemap.xml file seems to be a little overkill. It seems like a great concept and could be perfect in some cases, but for our site we feel that a static sitemap would fit our needs better. When unchecking the Dynamically Generate Sitemap option, we are having issues with the generation of the static sitemap file(s). More or less I want to confirm that we are doing everything correct and understand what should happen.

Just to note, we saw some errors with W3TC, so on our dev server we disabled this plugin as well as deleted it completely. We wanted to eliminate the chance of this plugin being a conflict and source of our issues.

From our understanding, when we would uncheck the dynamically generate sitemap option, the plugin should create a physical sitemap.xml file when we hit the Update Sitemap button… is this correct? We have tried multiple prefixes in case of a naming conflict, turned off/on multiple combinations of each sitemap settings, manually created the files that we would expect AIOSEO to create (with full write permissions), and a few other more detailed tests.

Before I go on about troubleshooting and get off topic, I will keep this thread short and sweet to make sure we are not missing the obvious.

Thanks,

Steve

Can you confirm the actual setup and outcome for static? I know you recommend dynamic but we would like to just test static for now as our WordPress has lots of customizations and it would fit our needs better. We are aware of potential issues like having a sitemap overwritten and stale data, but that is another topic that I am sure we can overcome if we come to that.

If you uncheck Dynamically Generate Sitemap then a static file called sitemap.xml (or whatever name you gave it) is created in the webroot of your server.

Okay, that is what we assumed. Thank you for the clarification.

Just FYI – The “Click for help” short description and the documentation is misleading to some degree. Even if you are pushing dynamically updating, I would personally word that better and explain what happens in detail if checked and unchecked.

Thanks again,

Steve
