1. Where can I find further documentation on how to use canonical? I’m fixing my duplicate pages. From what I know, I’ve to add the preferred url on the ‘custom canonical URL’ field (example type in – http://www.altheadistributor.c…../about-me/). I don’t need to put the “rel=”canonical” right?

2. If my issue is say duplicate page on http://www.altheadistributor.c…..-me/page/2 – since it’s not a post or page, where do I put the canonical url? This is where I’m confused.

3. Also if the similar page is http://www.altheadistributor.c…../about-me/ & http://www.altheadistributor.c…..e/location… Do I put the same canonical url on the same page?

I started adding URLs on the custom canonical field, since I do have very similar pages. Example – for Page A, I placed its url to Page B’s custom canonical (since Page A&B have very similar content). Should I undo this?

As for the href within these pages, I did not do anything. Should just ‘uncheck’ “Enable Custom Canonical URLs”? ?

Hi, just purchased All in One SEO Pro, installed it and now trying to do some basic configurations. I have to mention that I am a beginner in SEO and will try to improve and do the SEO of my site myself. Is there any help documentation to be used for the “General Settings” page ?  I have noticed that there is some help docs available, but not really focused on the settings page. This would be a great help for any beginner in SEO, after installation of the plugin!

At General Settings, I have removed the tick of the field “Canonical URLs”. Should this be activated as it was as default? Thanks.

You absolutely should not deactivate Canonical URLs, you want this active.  Most of the settings in All in One SEO Pack, General Settings are already set for you and don’t need to be touched.  You can find documentation for each section and setting by clicking on the Help link or the ? icon.

Hi Steve (watched you for a while on the plugin response areas),

Is is correct to understand that in WP, we all have a ‘homepage’ with posts, and those ‘homepage posts’ point to the ‘unique post page’ of course with the same content.

Logically, this is two locations for the same content (duplicates). Isn’t that then to be considered duplicate content by the engines?

I love AIO, and have been very careful in my adjusting the settings (I come from many years in SEO but this was back ‘in the day’ and after my return 7 years later, everything/rules are now different 😉

It does seem that AIO in pretty nifty out of the box, but I’ve got the PRO version, and am looking to tweak it a bit more advanced.

So in the end, is it differentiated (and expected!) that in the gazillions of WP installs around the world, that an install has a ‘homepage’ (with say 5,6,7 posts per page) and then it is to be expected that it duplicates itself on the respective ‘pages’ of the ‘post’? Therefore, not harming the overall site?

I hope I’m making myself clear. 🙂

I’m also curious as to the pagination situation that is so evident these days. I’ve gone ahead and enabled the “No Pagination for Canonical URLs:” function, after investigating the matter further, it seems this might be a better thing to do for the engines (I’m also starting to see this more & more in certain SERPs more now too.)

Thanks,

Drew

The meaning of duplicate content as stated by Google and for which they penalize sites is the unauthorized copying or duplication of content from another persons website for the purposes of spamming search engines.  Multiple links to the same con………….

Interesting. Then why would AIO PRO have the ‘noindex’ options it has available if this is the case for content inside of one’s site. E.g., where it has the option(s) “

These options occur constantly, and mentions about ‘avoiding duplicate content’ (but this content as you say is ‘onsite’ content.

Then one more question would also be re: taxonomies.

E.g., what would one do in a situation where a post is labelled with multiple categories relating to AIO settings, etc.

mysite.com/category1/samepost/

mysite.com/category2/samepost/

mysite.com/category3/samepost/

Would it, should it(?), be even necessary then to declare a static canonical URL for any reason, or just let them be like we used to.

Much thanks for your hard work on AIO

You wouldn’t do anything in the situation where you have a post that belongs to multiple categories.  Google knows that a post can belong to multiple categories.  Google is smarter than you think.  Again, this is NOT duplicate content.

Thanks. Yes, I understand. It is said, and you have echoed, about ‘other site content’. As many note in today’s web, huge sites revolve around sharing content. Indeed, even WP has a “Press This” bookmarklet millions use.

One of the sites I’m working with centers around sharing different articles – whether they be from CNN or ESPN Sports. What then would be the best way to not get penalized while still sharing the (their) content? Many of the most popular sites online share ‘excerpts’ or blocks of 2-3 paragraphs from other sites still to this day. This is what you state above, where duplicate content is frowned upon, and penalized. Please address this VERY grey area on what the almighty, all-knowing, Google Electric Lawnmower Man Al Goreythm “might” be meaning.

Also, you did not address the question why then, does AIO even have the many, multiple tick-boxes addressing the duplicate content issue when I quoted the AIO options like, “E.g., where it has the option(s) “

Theere are numerous. multi-options where AIO is saying, “, , ad nauseam. etc. It then becomes a bit misleading, frustrating & confusing, don’t you think? Not only for myself, but for newbies as well.

Given what you have said, could it be that All in one seo is the problem when google reports duplicate content in cases where posts appear in two or more categories? I was using another SEO before I changed over to AIO seo. Now google reports duplicate content. When I checked, they were posts in two or more categories.

This issue needs looking into as to what the culprit is.

Steve,

so then if I use a post from a sports blog e.g., and copy about 200 words like most other blogs would, should I then give the canonical over to the originating blog? (in advanced post settings [WP])

I remember reading this somewhere on someone’s other SEO blog.

But…

Doesn’t / wouldn’t this mean that my sports blog would lose the engine listing if I’m giving over the canonical?

I mean c’mon. Please help us here. If there is a car accident in AOI Town, and I go to google and type in “Car accident, AOI Town” I’m gonna come up with an entire page of plagiarism from multiple news sources covering and COPYING the original article, and the original news station’s article is not even #1 at the top.

Literally, the entire Page 1 of google is covered in plagiarism ripped off content.

I agree with the last poster regarding categories, and since then even if I have multiple categories, I’m still using the canonical to designate the “main’ category.

I seem to be reading some ‘gray’ info here, and everything is not clear.

Care to elaborate at least a bit? I know, and can sense, you’re sick of us, but any help would be nicely appreciated.

Cheers

PS – Nosa, you must obviously be referring to the psycho-destructo plugin Yoast. Don’t worry. You can mention the twats in here. I don’t think Semper would mind. 😉
