I understand that to exclude pages from the sitemap one needs to input page slugs or page IDs, seperated by commas into the box provided.

However, if the page slug includes a forward slash / it would appear not to exclude it from the sitemap.

Is this the case? Or is there any other way to exclude certain category pages from the sitemap? (If I use the check boxes to exclude certain categories I loose the pages that I want to show along with the pages I don’t.)

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your response.

So here’s the conundrum that I am facing with the sitemap for my website http://www.hooley.ie

– Each post has two categories and two tags associated with them.

– There are 32 Tags in use and 185 Categories

– I only need some of the urls created by the tag and category pages to be displayed in the sitemap and indexed by search engines.

– If I tick the box in the excluded categories section of the sitemap admin then it also excludes the post that is associated with it.

Do you have any suggestions on how to work around this?

Thanks!

Hi Steve,

Furthermore to what I’ve outlined above I’m not convinced I should leave the sitemap as it is. As I’ve detailed it includes over 200 category and tag archives.

Each post on the directory gives the details of a particular musician. Both categories and tags are being used to donate the “county” and “music type” of the post. The motivation behind this is to detail to the “Essential Grid” extension to display posts as we so wish.

For example “Groove Collective” have their own post on the directory https://www.hooley.ie/groovecollective/. This has the category of “wedding band” (which is a child of “Cork”) and “Cork” (which is a child of “Wedding Band”) associated with it (See images below). It also has the tags of “wedding band” and “Cork” associated with it.

To this end it is displayed on the “music type” category page of https://www.hooley.ie/category/Wedding-Bands/ where a user can filter the results by “county”.

It is also displayed on the “county” tag page of https://www.hooley.ie/county/Cork/ where a user can filter the results by “music type”.

Both of the “music type” and “county” pages as listed above should be included in the sitemap. These are pages that include content and that I want search engines to index.

However, under the categories archives the vast of majority of the pages don’t have content. For example:

https://www.hooley.ie/category/wedding-bands/weddingbands-cork/

https://www.hooley.ie/category/cork/cork-weddingbands/

These are examples of the pages that I am concerned about. I don’t want them appearing in SERPs as they have no value to the user. If I input the slugs “weddingbands-cork” & “cork-weddingbands” into the excluded pages they still appear in the sitemap.

Currently I have marked all of these categories as “NOINDEX this page/post”.

Sorry for being so long winded about this but I just wanted to make it clear as to what I am trying to achieve.

So can you see if there is a solution to this?

Thanks for your help Steve!

Hi Steve,

In relation to the pages that have no content they are not publicly accessible from the website. However, they are being submitted in the sitemap and thus google is finding them. These pages exist because they are all given a slug from within the category and tag areas of wordpress. If google decide to include them in SERPs this might hurt the overall site. Is this not the case?

Again for the category and tag archives pages are being created from their slugs and being submitted in the sitemap. They don’t necessarily have content that I want displayed.

Apologies for labouring this and thanks for your support.

If I uncheck the category box (or the tag box) then the problem is that some pages that I want to include in the sitemap no longer appear.

Hi Steve,

In relation to Excluding All Categories:

If I choose this option then particular pages that I want to appear don’t appear in the sitemap.

In relation to Excluding Specific Categories:

Then as I’ve already outlined not only do the pages such as

https://www.hooley.ie/category/Wedding-Bands/

but also the post associated with the category disapears from the sitemap.

https://www.hooley.ie/groovecollective/

The only solution as I see it would be possibly this:

Exclude all categories and then input pages into the “Additional Pages” box.

This is obviously not ideal but its the only way that I see around this. What do you think?

(Thanks once again for your patience in relation to this!!!)

Hi Gerry,

I’ve taken the option to exclude all of the categories and tags from the sitemap. Then I’ve added in all of the pages of these categories and tags that I want included in the sitemap through the additional pages section. So, I’m happy now that the sitemap is as it should be.

One small further query – The sitemap is being detailed twice in the robots.txt file. How do I amend this?

Thanks again!
