Screen-Shot-2018-07-19-at-5.09.45-PM.pngImage EnlargerHi there.

When I am adding a title to a specific page, I may enter let’s say: “Live Webcasting” (without the quotes)

Yet the filed warns me in red that I have 93 characters.

In addition , the Snippet that is displayed within your SEO tab on that page shows a snippet of text from somewhere else.

Thank you,

j

Thanks Michael.

This isn’t a hypothetical. The screenshot was from the site/link I included. Each page I am trying to edit the SEO settings for is displaying this type of thing.

I understand the character count arithmetic as you describe it. But I don’t grasp the reason the plugin adds the characters together as you describe or why I can add this meta data in two places..

I am working with a page. As I understand it, it is not a post type and is not using a template. I created it. Now, I certainly don’t know WP well enough to say that with conviction, so I may be wrong.

If I can add a title in the page, and in the template. Which take precedence? Why can I add entirely different info in one place and not see it in the source?

Here is a link to a page.

https://www.icvdm.com/how-to-webcast/

Attached is a screenshot of the admin. I think that is what you asked for – “you could show an entire screenshot of a real example of a page with this behavior, including what is happening that isn’t expected and what isn’t happening that is expected, along with the URL. “

Thanks again!

J

Thank you Arnaud! That is a description I can understand. I am still confused about the use of the word “template” which you and Michael refer to. I think you mean the THEME? That makes sense. Thank you for the screenshot.

In my general settings compared to yours. Screen-Shot-2018-07-20-at-5.51.00-AM.pngImage Enlarger

I see Description:  %Description% – I understand this now. If I remove the variable &description% from the General Settings, then only the description I add for each page will be included in my Source. Correct?

I see Page Title Format: %blog_title% (Yours says %page_title%)

I don’t see the %page_title% variable referenced in the help anywhere. Are you saying that I need to have %page_title% in the General Settings field rather than leave that field blank? Or is it enough to simply Uncheck “Rewrite Titles” if I want to ONLY see my page specific titles in my source?

In the help I found this page that addresses my question in part.

https://semperplugins.com/documentation/why-does-the-character-counter-for-seo-titles-show-a-different-count/

“Therefore, if you have a Site Title that is 17 characters long including the pipe and spaces, then the character count for your SEO Titles will always start at 17 characters.  For example, the SEO Title below is 21 characters long, 4 characters for my title (FAQs), 17 characters for the Site Title, pipe and spaces (| Semper Plugins):”

But that seems to provide for having both my Page specific title appended to the Site Title – (%blog_title%)

So a Question:

If I wanted to, could I append my Page Titles or Descriptions to the Site title or Site Descriptions by using the variables in the General Settings in this manner: (assuming I don’t violate the count total)

Page Title: %page_title% | %blog_title%

Or,  maybe like this –

Page Title: %page_title% | My Company Name

if I wanted to follow the title guideline from Google that you reference on that page:

“We append the Site Title in order to comply with Google’s Quality Guidelines for Titles and Descriptions which states that titles should be branded.  Specifically, they state “consider including just your site name at the beginning or end of each page title, separated from the rest of the title with a delimiter such as a hyphen, colon, or pipe”.

Also it’s not mentioned anywhere that I have found, but I have “Disable Title” per page CHECKED in my THEME settings for the pages. That is necessary I take it?

Thank you!

J

Excellent help. Thank you. This clears up a lot.

I’ll try a few things.

Oh one point to clarify. If i want to use any of the variables in the manner described what should be the status of the “Rewrite Titles” Checkbox?

Thanks

Arnaud Broes said
You should set it to “enabled” if you want the plugin to rewrite your titles for you and use the specified title formats. Otherwise your title tag will simply be whatever you’ve entered into the SEO title field.

So “Rewrite Titles” Checked means that each page’s titles will be used as we were discussing? Otherwise it uses ONLY then data in the General Settings.?
