Hey Steve/Arnaud,

I’m working on a major site, Bookstr.com, and the compressed sitemap is returning errors in search console. I’ve turned off the feature for now, but the site has tens of thousands of URLs, so it should be compressed.

Wasn’t this compressed sitemap issue resolved?

Hey Steve,

Hmmm…I may think it was because Google couldn’t read the sitemap at all since I inadvertently left the setting for search engines in WordPress > Reading active.

Let me see if clearing that setting and validating the fix with Search Console will clear those 39 errors for the Sitemap.

Would it be such that if I left Reading settings to discourage that Google would return those compressed sitemap errors? I’m suspecting yes, but am not sure. Just because the discourage setting was active, should that also mean that the submitted sitemap can’t be read regardless of whether it’s compressed or uncompressed?

Okay, thanks Arnaud.

I posted to Github that this happens to all my sites on WP Engine. But, this one site is also on Pantheon, so it’s an outlier.

Thanks, Arnaud.

Steve asked me offline for a screenshot of all the sitemap errors for the compressed sitemap. I thought I had taken a few for him, but now I can’t find them. If it pops up again on another site, I’ll let you guys know.

I just set Netmix.com to compressed sitemap, so we’ll see if that changes anything. That’ll be my test version to see if I can get errors back from search console with sitemap compressed when the sitemap submitted is “sitemap.xml” and not “sitemap.xml.gz.”
