Hello,

When enabling the index sitemap option (with compression) I’m trigger a 404 error which I believe is caused by w3 total cache browser cache settings and / or possible nginx.

I understand that this would be resolved with the correct 404 exceptions, however I tried a couple of options and it failed.

Can anybody suggest the correct settings to ensure the sitemap works with w3 total cache.

Just to be clear, the main index generates and displays OK, however when navigating to a child index the 404 is triggered. I had this exact problem with another SEO plugin and resolved the issue by adding the 404 exception.

Some additional information:

If I disable

I’m running nginx so I believe I would need an exception there also. This is my current exception list in inginx

if ($request_uri ~ “(robots.txt|sitemap(_index)?.xml(.gz)?|[a-z0-9_-]+-sitemap([0-9]+)?.xml(.gz)?)”) {
break;

On second glance the nginx rule may also be part of the problem.

In my W3 Total Cache 404 exception list I had

robots.txt
sitemap(_index)?.xml(.gz)?
[a-z0-9_-]+-sitemap([0-9]+)?.xml(.gz)?
(sitemapindex|[a-z0-9_-]+).xml
sitemapindex_(.*).xml.gz    <- this was added for AIOSEO

– slashes got removed in the regex rules above

Thanks,

Nic

The nginx regex does not appear to support the gz version of child index pages.

http://www.thedomain.ext/sitem…..age.xml.gz would not be caught I don’t think

if ($request_uri ~ “(robots.txt|sitemap(_index)?.xml(.gz)?|[a-z0-9_-]+-sitemap([0-9]+)?.xml(.gz)?)”) {
    break;
}

However, I did a quick change to

if ($request_uri ~ “(robots.txt|sitemap(_index)?.xml(.gz)?|[a-z0-9_-]+-sitemap([0-9]+)?.xml(.gz)?|sitemapindex_(.*)?.xml(.gz)?)”) {
    break;
}

So I did a permalink reset and no change.

Yes, for now I’ve disabled compressed sitemaps and I’m serving cached pages instead.

I’m pretty sure that the issue is that nginx in combination with w3 total cache is not lettering wordpress rewrite those urls as it triggering an nginx 404 page.

Will have to come back to this.

If you come across a solution I’d love to hear it.

OK, I’ll do some digging when I have chance. I’m using it as a proxy server to dramatically reduce server load when using statically cached pages.
